Chapter 3

Now I was really confused, which after living most of my life in Oz was really just second nature. Things rarely made the kind of sense a human could understand. “Glue?”

The Wizard paused in packing up a satchel with essentials, as well as another with gear for me. “Yes, she once made a marvelous glue that could bind a person’s parts back together. Fabulous stuff; a tin smith bought some off of her when he wanted to glue the fleshy bits of the Tin Woodsman and the Tin Soldier into a helper for his smithy. Let me tell you, it was a shock to those two poor men to meet that chimera of a person, and even more so when they found out he had successfully married the woman for which the two of them had lost their bodies. I think it will help us put Ojo back together. Somewhat. Now that he’s regained sentience, that is.”

Once his pack was on his back, the Wizard used his daily wish to turn himself back into an otter with a bristling mustache of whiskers, then conjured a rope for me to hold onto.

Once we were on the other side, I opened my mouth to ask the Wizard a follow-up question, but he put one paw to his mouth, shushing me, before whispering. “Remember, I don’t show up on any of the surveillance techniques, but you do. Don’t mention me by name, don’t address me if you can help it.”

I nodded and turned towards Mrow, who, if what the Wizard said was accurate, also didn’t show up in the surveillance magics, but who Ozma knew was present. “You know, Mrow, we’re awfully close to Glinda’s castle here. Why don’t we stop by and see if she has any advice on how to deal with this situation?”

“Capital idea.” Mrow replied with false bonhomie as he tried to shake excess water from his fur. “And while we’re walking, the wiz and I here can formulate our plan of action.”

“Alright, lead on, since you seem to think you know where you’re going.” I bowed and gestured for the giant otter to
